By the graft?

This method is the most common used and gives the patient a range of how many grafts they will receive based on the area of hair loss. Ranges can vary from company to company, the doctor's beliefs, surgical training and skill sets.

By the hair?

This method is used to sell the patient on a per hair basis. Patients will receive x hairs based on the amount of grafts they get. Some groups use a 2.3 to 3 hairs per graft average when calculating. Many times patients are misled by this method and the amount of hairs can vary depending on what formula is used in the calculation.

By the zone?

This method is used dividing the head into 3 zones front, middle and crown. Depending on the amount of hair loss, age and scalp elasticity, the doctor will determine how many zones will be treated.

By the square cm?

This method was recently adopted to sell the patient a transplant based on the donor area harvested. The doctor uses square cm calculations of the donor area to determine the fee for the surgery.
